This read-a-thon went surprisingly well for once! Yeah, yeah, flailing not failing, but I never could help the feeling that I could have read more after Bout of Books was over. But for this go-around I felt strangely focused and simply made time for reading throughout the day. It probably had to do with my extended vacation mentality, get through what you have to do in order to start something you WANT to do. Without further ado, here is the break down…
Twisted Dark is Neil Gibson’s interconnected psychological thriller anthology. This, the first volume, is formed of 12 individual and unique stories comprising of nearly 200 hundred pages. The stories vary from 10 year old girls to Colombian drug lords and everything in between but the stories are all somehow connected some obviously so and some not. It is left to the reader to find the connections, with some impossible to see until you have read multiple volumes. The books contains horror, dark, at times demented, stories incorporating every human emotion, illegal activity, and brutal reality. Using various illustrators allows each story and character to develop their own form the reader is left desperate to turn the pages. The book has been embraced by the comic book world receiving critical acclaim and a cult underground following.
Neil is the founder and lead writer at TPub. He is currently writing all of the titles at TPub, but is looking forward to the day when other writers are hired he can take credit for their work. He used to be a management consultant, before realising in his 30s that he loved good comics and wanted to make a career out of them. He believes that the comic book medium is one of the most efficient mediums for communicating stories. If you want to annoy him, just mention how you think comics are for kids. His reaction is a common source of amusement. He has given talks in universities and clubs about comics and will gladly talk anywhere he is invited to about comics and how underutilised they really are. To book Neil to give a talk, please firstname.lastname@example.org
So my progress from yesterday was a little…sporadic to say the least. I think that my official tweet says it all:
After coming back from a week on vacation, all my unread blog posts numbered in the five hundreds. I was proactive! I buckled down the first afternoon back while I waited for copious amounts of laundry and reduced it to about three hundred. Enter Bout of Books, which by no fault of its own, required book reading not blog posts. But I reasoned that I can read whenever, these blog posts are only going to grow exponentially. Smarter people (not myself) would say just cut back on the number of blogs you follow. Those people would be correct but when was doing the right thing ever fun, right?
Then, THEN, I was going to write a whole post about the OTP Challenge hosted over at Infinite Ink. But I couldn’t write anything until I got back from work around 7:30pm. So…
Procrastination for the win!
The beauty of not creating a TBR is that I could choose anything I wanted to read this morning. I gave myself SOME limitations by only picking from the numerous ARC titles that I still haven’t read OR reviewed <– bad, bad book blogger.
Lately I’ve been reading a lot of science fiction/fantasy so going along that same vein I started…. Continue reading
I just got back from vacation and all I’ve been doing is reading. Throw in boat loads of laundry and the fact that I don’t even know my hours at work tomorrow, it will be interesting what I manage to read THIS week. But then again, I have all you lovely Bout of Book-ers to inspire and encourage me to read all the books!

I specifically left my goals list pretty bare bones. I like to give myself wiggle room so that I don’t feel hampered down by my Bout of Books goals. Because let’s be honest, it feels so damn good to cross stuff off your goals list. So if this sounds like your kind of jam, check out the blog and make sure you sign-up here.
Have a great day with an even better book!
Hello to all the new followers!
I feel bad that there’s so many new faces and so little posting. I wanted to write a little update so you know what I’ve been up to lately. I’ll start off with the bad news…my little sister’s boyfriend lost HIS little sister this past week. She was only seventeen years old. So last Thursday when I expected to have time off from work to finish posts, I attended her wake instead to support my sister. Although I never meet Marissa, I’m saddened by a bright and full life cut much too short. Marissa and her family were huge fans of the New England Revolution. At their next home game, the Revs are going to have a moment of silence for this amazing young lady.
So the good news…I’m car shopping! Albeit, I don’t really have a choice. The inspection is due in the car I’m currently sharing with my father and neither of us want it to sink any money into getting the check engine light fixed. Thus, I need to find a car within the next month *cue hyperventilating* I looked at some used car lots today and wasn’t thrilled with the state of vehicles in my price range. Going back for a second look tomorrow before work at noon – wish me luck!
Second bit of good news is that I’m heading out to NY this Friday to visit the beau since I haven’t seen him in a MONTH. He’s very much in danger of me tackle-hugging him again. Although this time I’ll be the one with some luggage to drag around so he might be safe…this time.
I mean just look at how stinkin’ cute he is with our kitty Samantha! Miss them both like WOAH.
Soooo that’s why I haven’t been around much lately. And I apologize for completely dropping the ball with Armchair BEA. I wanted to participate so badly since I wasn’t attending either BEA and received my refund for BookCon (to be discussed in a later post).
Hope you have a great day with an even better book!
Welcome, welcome, one and all, to the Bout of Books Bookish Battle Royal. I’m ridiculously excited to be hosting my first ever read-a-thon challenge. But enough about me, let’s get down to the challenge. A battle royal is a no-holds-barred fight that includes three or more combatants and continues until only one is left standing. Maybe I’m a little sadistic but I instantly thought: “I should pit fictional characters against each other!”
- Choose three or more fictional characters as combatants – they can be haphazardly picked or themed (for example, I went with badass classic literature protagonists)
- List three strengths and weakness for each contender (feel free to skip this step if you’re using social media to participate in Bout of Books i.e. Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads…)
- Determine who would come out victorious and give a little explanation why you think they would win – get creative with the outcomes!
- Link in the comments and if you tweet about this challenge make sure to use the hashtag #bookbattleroyal in addition to #boutofbooks because I want to see all your dueling characters!
For this round of Bout of Books I’m going to keep my goals low-key because…
I’M A BOUT OF BOOKS CHALLENGE HOST!!
Pretty much it went like this:
Even with my challenge post written and ready to go, I still can’t believe it. Bout of Books is what started my YouTube channel and then this blog – I will be forever in debt to this amazing read-a-thon.
- Finish at least one book
- Write one full review
- Host a kick-ass challenge
- Complete at least one other challenge
- Participate in a Twitter chat (probably Saturday @ 10am)
- Have FUN!
What are some of your goals for Bout of Books? Are you excited to participate in challenges and discover more awesome blogs? Do you have a read-a-thon TBR or just winging it like me? Let me know in the comments!
